Precepts
As an 8-precept lay renunciant, I observe the following precepts:
abstain from taking life or causing harm
abstain from taking what is not given
abstain from sexual activity
abstain from harsh or wrong speech
abstain from intoxicants
avoid eating after midday
avoid entertainment & adornments
avoid luxury
Traditionally, the first five are considered ethical precepts and the last three are more about supporting the practice of renunciation. Generally a lay Buddhist follows the first three precepts and may take on the other three for holy days or for retreat. These are also guidelines, not commandments. I am trying to stick to eight instead of going back to five because apart from 6. they are mostly just a normal aspect of my lifestyle anyway. Also for a general lay practitioner, 3. is usually about abstaining from sexual misconduct without requiring full celibacy.
